Schema Update
The schema is essentially a set of instructions your database uses in order to manage data. Occasionally the database schema is modified by MedicalDirector Development. Such modifications are then applied to your database automatically, when you next install a Clinical / Pracsoft update (released periodically, and distributed to subscribers).
However, there may be rare occasions where you must update the database schema manually. This might occur if you had attempted to restore a database backup, but the process failed. In such circumstances, upon attempting to open and log into Clinical or Pracsoft you would be prompted that the database schema was out of date.
As the Schema Update utility works on your patient database, it is available only to computers that have the database installed i.e. where Clinical / Pracsoft is installed as either a Server or Standalone application. If you have a Workstation or Mobile installation of Clinical, you will not see the Schema Update icon in MedicalDirector Maintenance.
Furthermore, if you are a practitioner who doesn't have a patient database of your own, but travel from surgery to surgery accessing other databases, you will need to confirm with each surgery that they are running at least the same version of MedicalDirector Clinical / Pracsoft you have. Otherwise, upon trying to connect to their database(s) you may be prompted to update their database schema. They will have to update their version of Clinical / Pracsoft before you will be able to connect and log into their database.
